Which Statistic Matters? Effects of Category Size and Distribution on Statistical Category Learning
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present study investigates whether, and if so in what way, adult learners are sensitive to the properties of the statistical input, such as frequency and skewedness, when learning and generalizing category labels. Participants were presented with novel objects belonging to four different categories and heard category labels in a cross-situational learning task. The four categories were matched for the total amount of exposure but varied in category size and shape of distribution. Participants learned object-to-label mappings better for categories with a skewed distribution of fewer objects. Moreover, object-to-label mapping performance was positively related to the ability to extend category knowledge to novel items. Cooccurrence frequency or category size alone were not good predictors of label learning and generalization. The results indicate the importance of input distribution in word and category learning processes.

متن کاملWhat's behind different kinds of kinds: effects of statistical density on learning and representation of categories.
This research examined how differences in category structure affect category learning and category representation across points of development. The authors specifically focused on category density--or the proportion of category-relevant variance to the total variance. Results of Experiments 1-3 showed a clear dissociation between dense and sparse categories: Whereas dense categories were readil...
متن کاملDistributional expectations and the induction of category structure.
Previous research on how categories are learned from observation of exemplars has largely ignored the possible role of prior expectations concerning how exemplars will be distributed. The experiments reported here explored this issue by presenting subjects with category-learning tasks in which the distributions of exemplars defining the categories were varied. In Experiments 1 and 2 the distrib...
متن کاملSeasonal variation of air quality index and assessment
Different methods have been designed to calculate the air quality index in form of mathematical formula. But the formula designed by Central Pollution Control Board in 2014 is more robust to find out the air quality category. The index has been calculated based upon four parameters like particulate matters (PM10, PM2.5), sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide. The study area has affected by different ...
